We love these elephants and my 3 yr old twins get sooooo excited when they see all 3 elephants together. When we knew that Maliaka was new to the zoo we kept going hoping to get a glimpse of her. One of my boys kept wanting to go inside the building but it was always locked. Then one day we got LUCKY (no pun intended!). The door was unlocked and the nicest guy ever (I think his name was Dale...) let us come into the back and see her up close. Definitely one of the highlights of our MANY zoo trips.

Does the zoo practice Protected or Free contact with the elephants?

Hello Radar,

Thank you for your question.

We utilize Protected, Free and Modified Free contact handling systems with our elephants. What we use is based on the individual elephant, our safety, the animal’s safety and the needs of the program.

Thank you for visiting Cheyenne Mountain Zoo!
